How to Throw a
Clam Bake:
- Decide on your
menu: clams, lobsters, crabs, mussels, sausages, potatoes, corn
on the cob, etc.
-
Dig a 3x2-foot pit, approximately 2
feet deep, in the sand.
-
Cover the bottom of the pit with
large rocks.
-
Add firewood to the pit and allow it
to burn for several hours.
-
Once the rocks are red hot and the
wood has burned down to embers, gently rake off the hot ashes so
that they fall in between the rocks, creating insulation. Line
the pit with a thick layer of fresh seaweed.
-
Wrap the food in heavy-duty foil and
place the packets into the pit. Cover the wrapped food with
another thick layer of fresh seaweed.
-
To help create steam, cover the pit
with a large tarp soaked in seawater. Secure the wet tarp by
placing a large rock on top of each corner. Do not let the tarp
dry out. Keep seawater handy.
-
Allow the food to steam for several
hours until it is thoroughly cooked.
